Teaching and Writing in Vermont Schools:
a 3-credit Course for Your School

Presented by NWP-VT and the University of Vermont

Teaching and Writing in Vermont Schools is designed for local teachers to explore together both writing and writing instruction.  Participants will design and try out teaching demonstrations, read current literature in the field of literacy, experience various forms of writing themselves, and prepare their own lessons linked to local curricula, standards and assessments.
The course will emphasize:
  • Designing a literate environment
  • Feedback and conferences
  • Useful sequences of assignments
  • Grammar and mechanics
  • Writing across curricula
  • Classroom practices
  • Classroom mentoring
  • “The writing workshop”
  • James Moffett’s writing forms
  • Reading/writing connections
  • Reflection and voice in writing
  • Publishing and performing
  • Writing toward portfolio genres
  • Collaboration with local teacher leaders and administrators
  • Classroom visits and demos

Across the sessions, teachers in your school or district will:
  1.  explore teaching demonstrations
  2. learn about the theories that make them useful and transferable across grades and subjects   
  3. read current reports and texts on writing by top writing scholars
  4. link engaging writing assignments to local & state frameworks and assessments 
  5. write in various forms to develop a complete understanding of different assignments and approaches to writing
  6. participate in classroom-based presentations and mentoring
